From someone in the section:

This is an interview with Francis Yeoh of YTL Group. Remember the free concert by Andre Bocelli last year (2010) in Singapore's Botanical Gardens? It was sponsored by YTL group to give thanks to the Lord and to share about God's goodness. Do watch this interview, you will be blessed and touched. ^^

~ Our Beloved Section's History ~

A LONG, LONG time ago (sometime in 2005?), in a land FAR, FAR away (Singapore!), it all started out as one single SUNNYDALE cell consisting of the Lee family.

We grew SO big that at times we had 20+ people crowding the place, and we thank God for that.

1st multiplication was to bring LIGHT cell to more people in the land.

Next up, MIMOSA came up out of SUNNYDALE on Tue 2 Oct 2007.

LIGHT was bringing joy to the world, and thus they themselves multiplied into GEMBIRA & SK260C on Fri 5 June 2009.

Fri 2 Oct 2009, exactly 2 solid years to the day after MIMOSA multiplied out from SUNNYDALE, the 2 cells would thus combine to multiply out and form 3: MCNAIR (the original founding SUNNYDALE cell having shifted and thus changing name), MIMOSA & SUNNYDALE!~

And the story continues on & on & on......................

Where to next? To the ends of the earth!~

Stay tuned folks!~

=)

Quest for Love : John and Betty Stam

This is one of the love stories mentioned in Elisabeth Elliot's book "Quest for Love".

The story of a missionary couple who went to China and... met an untimely death.
In these turbulent times, I am encouraged by stories of bravery and of people coming to know Christ.

Let's press on for more!

Courage Concealed
A missionary couple whose looks deceived
by Mark Galli

In grainy 1934 photos, missionaries John and Betty Stam stare at the camera through tortoise-shell glasses. Betty's hair is pulled back, and John wears a dark suit. The faintest hint of a smile rests on their innocent, perhaps even naive, faces.

Yet the pictures deceive. They mask the singlemindedness within, a resolute courage that drove the couple apart, then reunited them to serve in war-ravaged China until an untimely and gruesome death.

In the late 1920s, foreigners in China found themselves caught in the vice of civil war. Many missionaries were murdered, so in 1927, half of all foreign missionaries were evacuated. Two years later, when the head of the China Inland Mission (CIM) asked for 200 new recruits, 89 men and 111 women volunteered. Among them was Betty Scott, the daughter of Presbyterian missionaries to China and new graduate of Moody Bible Institute.

While at Moody, Betty attended CIM-sponsored prayer meetings and Bible studies, where she first met John Stam. He, too, had his heart fixed on China. With so much in common, the two were immediately attracted to one another. It seemed God was pointing their future in the same direction.

But they balked at marriage. John knew he would be asked to work in areas "where it would be impossible to take a woman." Nor could he ask her to wait for him—he still had a year to go in school. Missions, not matrimony, would come first. So Betty, without John, left for China in 1931. They did not expect to see each other again.

United forever
Following his graduation from Moody in 1932, John sailed for Shanghai. In a twist of fate, Betty, after a year of missionary work in the country's interior, became seriously ill and returned to Shanghai for medical care. There she and John had an unexpected reunion that resulted in their engagement. Within a year they were married, and in September of 1934, Betty gave birth to a baby girl, Helen Priscilla. The Stams were sent to Anhwei province, where there was "no danger of Communists in the area," the local magistrate assured the CIM.

But within two weeks of their arrival, the Stams were arrested by Communist soldiers and placed under heavy guard. John wrote CIM headquarters and relayed their captors' demand: a $20,000 ransom. He closed with, "The Lord bless you and guide you, and as for us, may God be glorified whether by life or by death."

The soldiers also discussed how to dispose of their baby, since she would be a liability if they had to flee. A local farmer heard of their situation, and stepped forward to plead for the baby's life. The soldiers said it would be his life for hers. He agreed, and he was killed on the spot.

The next morning, as Betty was bathing Helen, soldiers suddenly burst in and ordered them to leave the house—without baby Helen. John and Helen were stripped to their undergarments and paraded down the street. A crowd gathered as a soldier read their death sentence.

A Chinese doctor, a Christian, made a last-minute plea for their lives; without hesitation the Communists condemned him to death. John begged for mercy for the doctor, but to no avail. Then John and Betty were ordered to their knees, and in quick succession, both were beheaded.

Thirty hours later, a Chinese evangelist found baby Helen abandoned in a house. He concealed her in a rice basket and made a dangerous journey over hundreds of miles of mountainous terrain and delivered her to her grandparents, the Scotts.

Helen, raised by her grandparents, became a school teacher and eventually settled in the eastern United States.

Though the Stams' missionary assignment was cut short on earth, their influence was long lasting. Over the next decade, hundreds of young men and women volunteered for missionary service as the result of their resolute courage—a courage concealed by tender faces.

A conversation with my boss

Hi everyone,

I shared this at cell yesterday evening and wanted to share with you too the conversation I had with my boss yesterday morning. I hope it will encourage you as much as it has for me.

My boss called me into his room at around 9:30am yesterday to talk about performance appraisal for 2008. Btw, he is a cell leader at FCBC. The conversation started normally and he was telling me how I seemed to be working too hard and spending too much time in the office. He was saying how it was important to have the right work-life balance early on in life, otherwise it will be hard next time on the family since these are habits that take time to change. Imagine your boss telling you to work less and go home earlier! That was not all. We started to talk about how we see work, whether we live to work or work to live. Suddenly, he remarked "work is worship unto God!" I almost fell off my chair as normally people don't openly talk about God in the office, especially between superiors and staff.

After that, he quoted the verse "Seek first the Kingdom of God and all things will be added unto you." He then asked me, "So do you know the Hebrew word for 'first'?" I shook my head. He followed up by saying, "'First' comes from the Hebrew word 'proton' which means 'centre'." Many a times, when I hear this verse, I always think that there is a list of priorities in my life and God wants me to put Him and His kingdom at the #1 position. However, the truth is that God wants us to put His kingdom in the centre of our lives and everything else will fall into place naturally around it. This was such a refreshing revelation! No wonder God says everything that we do (work, play, study etc), it is a worship unto Him. We no longer need to compartmentalize our life into days/hours for church, cell, work, family if we can put His kingdom in the centre of our lives and everything else that we do is integral and part and parcel of seeking His kingdom.

In reality, there is no secular life vs church life if every seemingly secular thing that we do is an act of worship unto Him. For myself, I am asking God in 2009 to help me to use the work that I am doing at EDB as a shining testimony for other people in the marketplace, that this work is part of my ministry that will impact lives around me. I pray that God will impress this beautiful truth upon all of you as well. Before I left the room, my boss reminded me, "Ask God to reveal his destiny for you as you think about our career plans in the next few years." I want to praise and thank God for sending people to speak into my life and reminding me to always seek Him and put His kingdom in the centre of my life.

Cheers, from light* cell member who works for the govt...

My testimony goes like this ...

Sep 2006
Left for UK to escape the great depth of unhappiness I was feeling.
Fell down the stairs and broke my leg.
Questioned if God is real.
Flew back to Singapore for treatment.
Wheelchair-bound for 3 months and walked using a walking aide for another 3 months.

July 2007
Still unhappy, I left everything and backpacked Europe for one month in search for answers. Met Cory who was a friend of a friend of a friend in Munich. She bought me to a church that I went to again myself subsequently and God spoke to me in that Church ... He never left.

Sep 2007
Went for follow-up at SGH for leg and was told I might never be able to run again and I need to accept the fact that my body will never be able to function the same way as before the fall. Left the clinic in tears.

Nov 2007
Cory came back to Spore and invited me to Trinity Church.
Did the Vertical Marathon to overcome my phobia of stairs. Couldn't have done it without God!

March 2008
Prayed for healing during Easter Service. I felt a warm sensation passing through my body to my foot. Felt better after that but didn't give it too much thought.
Joined a cell group and started serving in church.

Aug 2008
Missions Impact Trip to Chennai where we had the chance to spread the Gospel to hundreds.

Sep 2008
Completed my first 'marathon' with Rach!- 5 km

Nov 2009
Finished Top 10 in the women 20-29 category for the vertical marathon. This is for you God!
***
I was never meant to escape to UK and I still believe the fall was God's way to bring me back. I was angry with him then but He never left. He held on to me when I hated and blamed Him. I couldn't see his great plans with my myopic vision.

Was at SGH for my follow-up today and doc says I can do whatever I want ... jump, hop, run ... anything. Praise God!

Life is not perfect still and there are still issues but I've found such great joy in God and it's comforting to know that He will be my strong tower, my shelter and He will give me enough strength to get through another day. With God, life simply is Xtraordinary ! =D

But the people who trust the Lord will become strong again. They will rise up as an eagle in the sky. They will run without needing rest. They will walk without being tired. - Isaiah 40:31

~Testimony!~

Super duper belated repost from Rebecca Lincoln, 1 July 2007.

morning!

i have photos to show everyone from my graduation on the 19th of june 2007. graduation was a testimony itself of God's providence in my life. some of you have already heard it at sunnydale cell/project daniel (where jaena gave me an opportunity to lead yesterday!). for the rest, take time to read through this and i hope the testimony will encourage you as well (for those lazy to read and just want photos scroll down and click on the photobucket links with descriptions).

for a long time, i've had faith in God because God has provided for my family. those of you who have visited my house would have heard me say that a lot of the things we have at home were gifts from friends. on graduation day itself, i received first hand God's favour and providence. this came about by me being silly and it taking place in the morning when i was setting up panels for graduation. i didn't know you weren't supposed to use glue on styrofoam because it will corrode the styrofoam. it was only after i glued everything that my friend's brother told me. by then, i had used up all my tape and i prayed to God to provide tape. i went around asking and loads of friends gave me tape to use. some even helped me put up the top panels, which was really nice. the panels ended up staying up the whole night so thank God!

second occurance was when we were waiting for the examiners to grade our panels. one of my best friends was late and he asked me to stall the examiners. i didn't get how to stall the people who could fail you if you were late so i was praying for God's favour that i wouldn't get screamed at for trying to stall examiners. my friend came and i helped him set up his panel. halfway through, the examiner marking my friend's panel was done and walked to the next person (i was next). i freaked out and later calmed down to pray. i was afraid i would fail. the examiners that went to the next person were lecturers from our school. they knew what we'd been doing for the past 6 months and after thinking about it, i was sort of relieved that they didn't grade me. i prayed for God's favour and waited close to 45 minutes before the programme director asked if i'd been graded and got someone to grade me. the grading went well. he liked my artwork and all was good. having a creative designer tell you he liked your artwork was a big relief.

third occurance was when my friend offered to redo my makeup. we rushed back to her hotel across the road and she helped me redo my makeup. as we were leaving her brother said i didn't look nice with glasses and suggested wear take his contact lenses. i told him the degree would probably not be the same but he insisted that i go see. imagine my surprise when i saw that his contacts were very similar to my degree. mine was 2.75 for both side and his was 2.70 for one side and 2.75 for the other side. it blew my mind and i remember thanking him for providing for me.

anyway, now that i've given my testimony, photos!

SALVATION in SUNNYDALE!!!~ =)

Hello all!

We have a new salvation in Sunnydale!

I met Michelle for lunch yesterday and she told me that she was ready to receive God into her life! I thank everyone for their prayers and I thank God for working in her life!

Rebecca Lincoln

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you Rebecca:)
Dear all, yes I wish to recieve him as my saviour. I've been lost for such a long time and was struggling with myself....As I read the book which Rebecca lent me, I tried to follow the way it leads me, without much doubt or hesitation, I thought that only through him that I surrender all and give myself totally to him could I really get close to him, and the most amazing part is, when I made this decission, it turned out to be really a relif and a new start to me. As Rebecca told me , I know there is still a long way to go and I'm still like a toddler on the way of serving God, yet I just feel excited to try and ready to recieve whatever he presents to me.
Thank you all and wish to see you tomorrow on cell.
Everyone has a blessed week ahead!
Cheers,
Michelle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On behalf of all of us here in Sunnydale, Light and Mimosa: Welcome to the one big happy family of God! CONGRATULATIONS Michelle!!!~ =)

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:7

Kenneth's Testimony of God's Providence

Shared at Thanksgiving 2006, Holiday Inn Atrium

Salut les amis,

My job deals with providing security officers for events & exhibitions, which is a rather seasonal industry. It is also a very competitive industry, with many security agencies for clients to choose from out there in the market. There is usually a clash of timing when many events and exhibitions are held concurrently. There would thus be a huge demand for security officers. But there will also be certain times when there are almost no events being held. This was was happened last month, July 2006.

During cell on Tue night 18 Jul, we prayed for God to provide work for me. Amazingly, the calls & e-mails started to pour in when I stepped into the office the next morning, Wed 19 Jul. Thu 20 Jul, a contract was signed to provide security officers for a SONY roadshow for the whole of the following week. Just like that, God provided! I did not have to do a single thing! And this is just the beginning!

As in any business, it is easier to get contracts through word of mouth, relationships, contacts, rather than cold calling sales techniques. People would be more willing to trust that you would do a good job if they know of someone close who had the same level of good service from you. SONY was already a client of ours.

Another contract which began as a cold call was also signed on Thu 20 Jul. God's mighty hand can be seen at work in more than one way here. To start with, corresponance with the client went extremely smoothly and FAST! In the few months that I had been sending out quotes, people would usually try and bargain for a better deal, a cheaper rate, discounts. They would also take some time to reply, presumably to get a few more other quotes for comparison purposes. NOT this client. The speed at which the contract was signed, sealed and delivered left me speechless! It seemed to me that God was speaking to my client to just accept all that I had to offer!

Payment terms of a 50% deposit and the remaining 50% to be paid immediately after the event / exhibiton was completed were rarely adhered to. Delays in payment were inevitable, sometimes taking up to a few months, even with the constant reminders for payment. Big MNCs, small sole proprietorships, they were all the same. "Send me the invoice," the client said, "And I'll pay the deposit." Without me even having to say a word! Who would VOLUNTEER to part with their hard earned money that easily? Very few I guess. Now pardon me for my lack of faith, but I was just wondering when the deposit would be paid? I received the cheque a week before the event commenced.

A third contract was also signed within this short period of time, with minimal fuss during correspondance too. The wonderful part? All 3 contracts will run consecutively, with not a single overlap of dates.

I can keep going on and on forever about all the contracts that seemingly fell our way, all the contacts in the industry that I made since I started work in December 2005 or all the miraculous interventions when I was super stressed out (tons of white hair and pimples! argh!) over disappearing acts of employees (industry norm) and all seemed lost - you know what I mean Shuan. But things will still turn out fine in the end.

~Praise the Lord!~ God is indeed Jehovah Jireh, my provider, who will supply all my needs!

Be blessed,
ken =)
