Walking in the Word - Elijah - 1 Kings 17

Just wanted to share my sermon notes on 6 Nov.

Biblical Perspectives re: biblical prophesy and the end times.
  1. Prophets predict the future and provoke the future. Isaiah 6:10 and Jeremiah 1:10
  2. Prophetic visions of the future are rooted in the past. Prophets emerge to give warnings when Israel strayed.
  3. Evil deeds produce evil destiny. Repentance restores fortunes. Also, not all adversity is the result of sin. Jeremiah 2: 19 - 20, 4:18, 4:16, 4:14.
  4. Prophetic people stand in the gap and war against sin

The church is God's prophetic people of the end times.

  • labour pains of the age to come
  • not for prophets only Numbers 11: 29 (NLT)

Elijah & Elisha versus Baal

  • who was Baal and what was Baalism ? 1 Kings 16: 29-34
  • God reigns over Israel and no compromise 1 Kings 17
  • God reigns over nature (rain) and creation
  • God reigns over Baal (v 8-16) - purpose of miracles is to show God's sovereignty
  • God reigns over life and death (v17-24)

Prophetic Posture

  1. powerful in private and powerful in public - no compromise - James 5:17-18, Matt 6:6, Col 3:3 Aidan's prayer
  2. Elijah is under the Word, not under the weather. Elijah comes because he is under the authority of God's word v 3 - 4, v5
  3. our relationship with God is a mission and not a rice bowl. LIVE IT WELL !
